Finding a way to talk so your kids will listen.

I have discovered something wonderful!

I have avoided MSN like the plague for years. Drove me nuts being interrupted at the worst times, and the older versions seemed to be full of bugs that messed up my computer.

Well recently, I have been communicating with some old friends, and I was encouraged to use MSN again. It's really cool to be able to talk to them sometimes, and I just set it to away if I am too busy.

But the coolest thing is my son is always on MSN. Now if I am in the middle of something I don't have to get up and tell him if the phone is for him, ask him to turn down the TV, or remind him to do his homework. I just send him a message. And you know what...he is finally listening to me. It's like I have learned a whole new language that he comprehends!

Last night, he started messaging me, and we had a great conversation about how he was feeling about going to high school. He was less than 30 feet away from me, and we could have just as easily talked face to face, but it was like he felt more comfortable confiding in me that way. We talked for more than a half hour. The longest conversation we have had in months.

I realize it sounds a bit odd, but as far as I am concerned any communication with a teenager is a good thing...I will take it however I can get it.

At least he can't shy away when I send him a big virtual hug that way!

Being the mother of a 15 year old boy myself I can totally relate to this! Maybe we should get another computer! LOL

I've always found it easier to write something than actually tell a person face to face. Less confrontation to deal with I guess...I hate confrontation and avoid it at all costs.
Btw...I changed my blog address. Here's the new one... http://www.twyladawn.blogspot.com

My neices spend more time "texting" and emailing their friends and leaving messages on Facebook and MySpace than they do talking to them in person. What a long way we have come since the days when cell phones were non-existant or they were big clunky things that had their own tote bag and you kept them in your car.

I agree with ec. Whatever way works to communicate with your kid is the best way! Who cares how it's accomplished?
